After the loss of players earlier in the day, the Kings of Wessex arrived at St Dunstan's school with three year 10's willingly stepping in to help the year 9's. We arrived with high spirits and ready for our third match of the season, desperate for a win. This turned out to be our day with an excellent 8-0 victory for the Year 9 hockey team.
We were slow to get started with combinations not quite gelling together yet. Mid way through the first half Kings scored their first goal by Alice Roy to go 1-0 up, our defence was a bit flustered with St Dunstans mounting a strong attack but a good hard-working effort from the girls especially playing up hill. We managed to get to half time with a small lead but it should have been a higher score as we failed to take the opportunities we had.
Kings started off in the second half with a number of strong tackles, good positioning into attack and amazing goals from our top goal scorer Sophie Warren, who scored 4 powerful goals. Dunstans struggled to find form and had no response to the continued onslaught Kings was giving them. After foul language and anger from a girl from the opposition her teacher sends her off giving us the player advantage. The positioning and tackles improved as the game went on, then Abi Campbell managed to find another gap in the Dunstans defence. Our goalie Kaitlin Pettitt was then able to come out of goal because our defense was holding strong, and the opposition also had no goalie due to kit problems so in the last two minutes Libby tucker scores the last goal making the score of 8-0.
