June 2013 GCSE Results

2nd September, 2013 by Exams Department

There were scenes of delighted celebration at The Kings of Wessex Academy on Thursday, as Year 11 students yet again harvested an outstanding set of GCSE results. We are very proud to be celebrating a record breaking achievement with 93% of students in Year 11 achieving five or more A*-C grades in their exams which compares very favourably with the national result of 68% said Assistant Headteacher Christian Hughes. In addition, the percentage of students achieving five or more A*-C grades including English and Maths was 69%. These excellent achievements come hot on the heels of the academy's first rate A-level results.

Mr Hughes praised the efforts of this year's Year 11 students and their teachers. He said, "This has been an excellent year for The Kings of Wessex Academy. These young people have worked incredibly hard to achieve these results which reflect well on the commitment and hard work of both the students and their teachers".

As always, the headline figures do not tell the whole story as there were many achieving far beyond this, with a remarkable 99 students obtaining 12 or more A*-C passes. The pass rate for all exams sat was 99%, with 27% of these being awarded the top grades of A*/A. The list of students who deserve to be mentioned individually grows every year and all of our students deserve our warmest congratulations but some of the highlights include the following achievements:

Cora Marks (Cheddar) and Ellie Brown (Shepton Mallet) achieved the highest number of A* and A grades, both obtaining 10 A*s and 2 As. Megan Kidner (East Huntspill) also performed extremely well banking 10 GCSEs at A* grade, 1 at grade A and 1 B. Four students achieved passes including 9 A*'s. They are Eleanor Dunlop (Wedmore); Christopher Hawkes (Draycott); Matthew Prestidge (Draycott) and Roisin Zamick (Cheddar). Other students performing exceptionally well include Samuel Woodroffe (Panborough) with 8A*s, 3A's and a B; Tom Hope-Stone Bell (Clewer) with 7A*s, 1A and 4Bs; Scott Jenkins (Biddisham) with 7A*s, 3A's and 2 Bs, and Jack Hughes (Rooksbridge); Rosalind Strang (Cheddar) and Gary Sutlieff (Cocklake) who all obtained 7A*s, 4As and a B grade.

Other high achievers include Imogen Howorth (Cheddar) who attained 6A*s, 5As and a C grade; Chelsea Llewellyn (Cheddar) who achieved 6A*s, 5As and a B; Janne Clark (Axbridge) who obtained 5A*s, 6As and a B and Josephine Hill (Cheddar) who achieved 5A*s and 7As. Other impressive results were obtained by Sophie Hodges (Rooksbridge) 5A*s, 5As and 2Bs; James Lomax (Winscombe) 5A*s, 4As, 1B, 1C and 1D; Benjamin Michiels (Rodney Stoke) 5A*s, 6As and 1C; Scott Phillips (Panborough) 5A*s, 3As, 3B and 1C and Madeleine Ralph (Winscombe) with 5A*s, 5As and 2Bs. These were among the top grades but there were of course many individual successes and stories in addition to these outstanding achievements.

The Kings of Wessex Academy would like to extend sincere and warm congratulations to all students who took their GCSEs this summer. They have brought enormous credit to themselves, their families, the school and their town or village. We look forward to welcoming the vast majority back to our successful sixth form in September and in being able to celebrate their continued and future success in their academic career.
