Summer shows her strength of character with hair donation

Year 11 student Summer McPherson, as bright and sunny as her name suggests, recently showed her strength of character when she donated some of her beautiful hair to help children who have lost their hair due to illness.
Over the past two years Summer has had medical issues that have involved her spending time in Musgrove Hospital. During her most recent stay she became friends with a younger girl called Esme (6) who was having treatment for cancer and had lost all her hair. Esme used to play with Summer’s very long auburn hair and would tell Summer how sad she was feeling and Summer used to cheer her up by talking to her and making her smile.
On Summer’s last day in hospital she saw Esme wearing a huge wig in the same colour as Summer’s hair as she loved Summer and her hair who made her think of a princess and enjoyed playing with it. This prompted Summer to make the decision to donate some of her own hair to The Little Princess Trust who provide real hair wigs free of charge to children across the UK and Ireland who have sadly lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses.
Summer did the deed and had 12” cut off her beautiful hair, which made her mother Mrs McPherson cry with pride at her generous hearted daughter and hopes it will inspire other children to do the same if they are able. Summer recalls how the hairdresser had difficulty cutting Summer’s hair as it is so thick.
Executive Headteacher Gavin Ball said:
“We are very proud of Summer for her very kind and bighearted donation of her own hair to help children who have suffered and lost their own hair due to illness. Summer is a brave and exceptional young lady and I believe she will continue to go through life making other people happy too.”
