A Time of Hope and Expectation
21st December, 2017 by Jude Owens
This week, students at The Kings of Wessex Academy went to St Andrew’s Church for the third week of Advent to celebrate Christmas on the Christian calendar.
Rev. Stuart Burns welcomed all the students who filled the church and lit the advent calendar as symbolic of the warmth of God’s love in our hearts at this time of hope and expectation.
Christian Leader Mrs Elizabeth Alden and Rev. John Angle led the service with some drama enacted by three Year 13 boys dressed as characters from the Christmas story – Joseph, a shepherd and one of the wise men, who were quizzed about their roles in the sacred story of the birth of Jesus. The interview style was modern and meaningful with references to stars, angels, and dreams; yet relayed the message of these unexpected events through the feelings of the characters.
The choir gave a stirring performance of “Oh Holy Night” accompanied by Marcus Ham on the piano and the brass musicians complemented the congregation’s singing of for the lovely carols, “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.” There were prayers for the student injured in the road traffic accident and silent prayer time for everyone to reflect and remember other loved ones and those in need this Christmastime, before Rev. Burns led the blessing and wished students and staff a good, joyful and peaceful Christmas.
