Miss Manley Umpires in Inter-Gulf Netball Championships in Fujairah
10th April, 2018 by Jude Owens
Last month, Teacher of P.E. Miss Manley left behind the grey skies of London to travel to the Inter-Gulf Netball Championships to Dubai.
Arriving 14 hours later in Fujairah, Miss Manley was one of seven umpires from across the UK invited to this prestigious sporting event. The tournament organisers met with all the officials to brief the umpires and help them adjust to the climate and time difference with a welcome evening beautifully set by the hotel poolside to introduce the players and officially open the tournament.
The standard of netball was good with some strong games by the athletes when Miss Manley umpired some of the best matches in the group stages including an 11-11 draw between Dubai Veterans and Abu Dhabi. It was a gruelling day umpiring for four hours in 29 degree heat. Following the day’s umpiring there was a Gala Dinner and presentations with opportunity to interact with the netballers from the day.
The final day was high quality netball with the semi-finals and finals taking place in the various categories. As one of the senior umpires and due to her performance across the tournament, Miss Manley was given the Cup Final between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. This was a huge honour and was a great game; although not as close as their first encounter in the group stages with Dubai winning the day comfortably. Most of the players across these two teams have now been selected to compete for the United Arab Emirates in the upcoming in Netball Europe Championships in Gibraltar.
At the conclusion of all the games the Awards ceremony, his Royal Highness, The Crown Prince of Dubai presented the awards to the winning players when Miss Manley was also extremely proud to be awarded as the Umpire of the Tournament.
Commenting on her success, Miss Manley said:
“I was delighted to be umpire at this year’s Inter Gulf Netball Championships in Dubai. It was a fantastic experience and is the result of years of hard work.”
