Students Learn of the Power of the Pen

27th July, 2018 by Jude Owens

Some Year 9 English students at The Kings of Wessex Academy recently learned about the power of the pen when they wrote persuasive letters to their chosen A List celebrities to request a signed photo.

Their real life writing experience was a huge success as replies were duly received back in the post by the student letter writers, from stars including Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe, comedian Rowan Atkinson, and football clubs Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC. The student football fans were especially delighted with Ethan Franklin’s signed team photograph and individual postcards from each of the Spurs players, including members of the England team: Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Danny Rose and Kieran Trippier. The exercise became all the more rewarding when football fever swept the nation as England then qualified for the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Teacher of English Mrs Kerry Egan said:

“This was such a good experience for the students, who could really appreciate that their carefully crafted letters yielded real results when the celebrities sent them signed photos. Well done to them all!”
