Axbridge Youth Sailors return from an intense summer's racing
6th September, 2018 by Jamie Harris, The Kings and Queens News Team
Siblings Jamie (17) and Bettine Harris (15) from The Kings of Wessex Academy and Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club are now back in school after five weeks of international sailing competition.
Bettine was representing GBR, sailing the 420 International dinghy in both the European championships in Portugal and the World Championships in Newport Rhode Island. Both events were steep learning curves for Bettine and her helm Megan Ferguson as it was first time they had faced the world’s top youth sailors in both tricky and complicated new conditions. However, they returned home full of confidence and won the 420 National Ladies Champions title in the season-defining regatta held in Brightlingsea Essex last weekend.
Jamie also competed in the European event in Portugal, but for the first time in the Olympic class 470 dinghy and he and his helm Tom Collyer also returned with much extra experience which helped them finish an excellent 5th at the 470 nationals, racing against professional and Olympic podium potential sailors.
In the midst of this Jamie and Bettine were reunited in the RS200 class where the brother and sister duo managed to win the RS200 Junior National Champion title held in Weymouth.
Bettine and Jamie have both been supported by local charity TS5C and the Axbridge Parochial Charity (The Jack Todd Trust) and Bettine has very recently been awarded a Sports Aid grant to continue her sailing career. Bettine and Jamie would like to thank all their supporters and the members of BCYC who have helped them to realise their potential.
Executive Headteacher Gavin Ball said:
“Well done to Jamie and Bettine for a very worthwhile and impressive summer as they continue to demonstrate their sailing skills on the international stage, proving their commitment in their chosen sport. But I know they are also dedicated in their studies in school and I wish them another successful year.”
