The Kings of Wessex Academy's Big Pitch on Tour!
11th July, 2019 by Becki Pearce
The Kings of Wessex Academy ‘Big Pitch’ entrepreneurs represented the academy at the Rotary Youth Showcase Event on Saturday 6th July at Stanchester School.
The Rotary Youth Showcase is an annual event hosted by the District Chair of Rotary and is an opportunity to showcase all of the Youth programmes that take place across the district. The Kings of Wessex Academy were invited to attend with our Big Pitch - our enterprise project aimed at Year 9 students. This year’s winners (back in March) were Fancy Fudge and one of the runner up teams was Nomm-on (biscuits). The Kings of Wessex students did a fantastic job of not only selling to the public but also speaking to the audience and host Mr Brian Kirkup about the skills they had gained through entering the competition and successfully running their own enterprises.
Scarlett Smith and Florence Reeson who were the 2019 winners of The Big Pitch were busy selling their fabulous fudge, whilst Nic Jones who was runner up with his 2 team mates in this year’s competition, stood alone on Saturday making and selling Nomm-on, but still did a tremendous job!
Ex-Kings of Wessex student Skye Frewin also spoke with confidence about her experiences of taking part in the annual RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) project which is an opportunity for selected students to attend a week long residential in Dartmoor, putting their leadership skills to the test by completing lots of challenging team work exercises. Skye has since gone on to participate in other voluntary roles whilst studying at Exeter University which she attributes to the opportunity she embraced through RYLA and the Mendip Rotary Club who funded her. She posed as a prime role model for the students.
Congratulations to all involved – we look forward to following your successes in the future.
