A Picture Paints a Thousand Words
30th Jun, 2008, by J Owens
Twenty Gifted and Talented Kings of Wessex Art students from all year groups proudly unveiled two large scale murals erected in the Sixth Form Common Room on Monday (30/6/08).

The students spent three months creating the works based on two different artistic approaches. The first by Keith Haring shows communities and relationships through the use of faceless figures and his characteristic style of bold lines and active figures to portray poignant messages of vitality and unity. The second inspiration was the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, whose exploration of the possibilities of abstraction made him one of the most important innovators in Modern Art.
The selected students worked on the vibrant project in their own time after school and during lunchtimes, and each painting incorporates their own panels, ultimately to create two final collaborative pieces. A wealth of students' Artwork is showcased around school, but it was decided to situate this exciting mural in the Sixth Form Common Room to be enjoyed by students and its creators.
Amy Downer, Subject Leader of Art said, "I am impressed by the commitment of our students who completed such wonderful large scale pieces in their free time. They worked well as a team in this entirely student-led activity producing two vibrant and timeless pieces of Art for the school."
Appropriately, the theme for the week in assemblies and across school is "A picture paints a 1000 words".
