Millennium Trust the future for Cheddar
26th Nov, 2008, by Jude Owens
The Kings of Wessex School Lower School students recently donned their non-uniform and Sixth Form students fancy dress to raise nearly £1,000 for The Cheddar Young People's Millennium Trust (CYPMT).
The CYPMT was established in 2000 for the new Millennium to encourage the young people of Cheddar to take pride in their village. They are helped in their educational, professional, or vocational training, and encouraged to engage in worthwhile activities in the community, Cheddar area, and other parts of the UK - or indeed, overseas. New clubs and organisations for young people in the area are also supported, and nearly 60 grants have been given to date.

The charity's initial target was £100,000 to provide a level of annual income for distribution as grants without eroding the value of the underlying capital. The Trust remains ambitious. After seven years they are nearly half way to reaching their initial target, thanks to the generosity of villagers, local organisations, businesses and Trust funds.
Former Headteacher of The Kings of Wessex School and CYPMT Trustee Keith Herring said, "We are determined to achieve our overall aim to distribute £5,000 in annual grants to the young people of Cheddar to serve the community for generations to come."
The school and The Cheddar Young People's Millennium Trust have a longstanding tradition of working together. Many Cheddar students have benefited from a grant and budding design students are busy competing to create a new logo for the charity.
