Hats to crown a King!
23rd Feb, 2010, by Jude Owens
Top milliner to the famous and TV judge on Britain's Next Top Model Louis Mariette recently brought some glamour to The Kings of Wessex School. Clad in a leopard-print jacket, cream jodhpurs, black patent knee-high boots and with his trademark spiky hair - Louis spent a day wowing GCSE and 'A' Level Textiles and Photography students.

A passionate professional, Louis talked with Textiles students about how he became a celebrity hat designer, giving advice on finding inspiration, success, and running a business. Louis showed some of his creations of bespoke hats, fascinators and bejewelled headpieces and accessories - prompting a class trying-on session with opportunity to ask questions and share ideas.
Born in Malawi, with Mauritian origins, Louis grew up in Botswana and Swaziland where he learned from nature. Animated by the colour and sparkle of endless species of flora and fauna, he collected semi precious stones, seedpods, cactus flowers, and beads and trimmings from local tribes. Mesmerised by bird feathers, beetles, butterflies and dragonflies, Louis the designer would later imbue his work with these remembered stunning colours and textures.
Louis discussed with Photography students his work on photo shoots and on the Britain's Next Top Model show, with advice on perfect lighting and settings for fashion photography, and sharing his experiences of working with some of the world's most famous in the field. He then showed the students and teachers how it is done - in a photo session on the infinity curve wall.
But, the best part of the day which must be the cherry on the hat was when Louis looked at students' work. He delighted students with his effusive encouragement and profuse praise.
Staff remarked how Louis was a charming communicator - and despite being a super star in his chosen industry he was entirely at ease with the students who adored him, and said it had been the best day they can remember.
Following the visit, and at the time of writing Louis has invited three students Art students to attend and photograph his new collection in London.
