Cheddar Valley Young Musicians - 20th Anniversary
9th Mar, 2010, by David Wadey of Mendip Rotary
A landmark was reached this year. The twentieth anniversary of the ever popular annual celebration of music by young musicians from the Cheddar Valley Schools, was held on Sunday 7 March 2010 in The Kings of Wessex School. The event, organised by the school and the Rotary Club of Mendip, was attended by over two hundred people and, as ever, a great night was enjoyed in appreciating the depth of musical talent in our schools.
The standard this year was confirmed as being as high as ever by the adjudicators: Hywell Jenkins and Rupert Kirby from Somerset Music, and Wayne Hahn, the musical director at St Andrews Church. Apart from fulfilling their main task, deciding who the winners should be, the encouragement and advice they offered to all participants was especially appreciated.
The winners were in three age groups: First Schools Saffron Tucknott, piano; Florence Read and Francis Leader, recorder duet. Middle Schools - Phoebe Lynch, trumpet. Upper School (KOW) Tom Haggerty, alto saxophone; Rebecca Rowntree and Eleanor Rowntree, piano and vocal duet.

May the next twenty years be as successful and enjoyable as the last twenty.
