Charities Week
5th - 9th December, 2011
The 2011 Charities Week was in aid of three charities: "Merlin", an international charity which provides worldwide emergency medical aid,
"Make a Wish UK", a national charity which grants wishes to sick children and "Freewheelers", a local charity which provides a local organ and blood
transportation service.
The theme was The Kings of Wessex Academy of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and the Senior Student Team took centre stage as characters from
J.K. Rowling’s adventure story sensation, Harry Potter. Like the gestation of a good book, the team had been plotting their
magical week for months and certainly cast their own spell on this great Kings tradition. There was the famous
pie-eating, renamed The Hogwarts Feast, (on the menu of which was Cockroach Clusters, Butter Beer and of course - the pies, filled with a wicked
concoction of mango, butternut squash, ginger, cinnamon and vinegar), Wizard Waxing and a new event Would I Lie To You? based on the
popular TV Panel Show. Former Kings student Jez Starr brought some magic to astound the audience with his mind-boggling tricks and the classic
Charities Week veteran event, The Gunge Tank brought a lot of laughs. An Autograph Auction and Raffle (with many fabulous prizes donated by generous community supporters)
were a great success and the week finished on a heady high with Rock and Roll Years in which
an absolutely fabulous line-up performed brilliantly.
A massive thank you to all those involved in the event, including students and staff, parents who came
to the Charities Week evening, the community supporters who donated many fabulous prizes and Cheddar First School, Wedmore First School
Academy, Fairlands Middle School and Hugh Sexey Middle School, for all their generous donations.
