Community

The school is actively involved in several projects within the local community.

I.T. for the Terrified

As part of our technology status, we provide a grant and technical assistance to I.T. for the Terrified, a local IT training centre. I.T. for the Terrified provide informal training, either on designated courses or one-to-one sessions. It is managed and run by volunteers, and as a result, prices are kept low. I.T. for the Terrified are based within the school grounds in a recently refurbished, professional looking, fully accessible training centre.

The Kings Theatre

In 2007, the school's new state-of-the-art theatre was opened. As well as being used by the school, the Kings Theatre is used by Cheddar Arts, a community arts organisation based in the Cheddar Valley. The Kings Theatre has seating for an audience of 240 and is fully equipped to professional standards with seats raised for perfect viewing. Recently, a new screen has been installed for the showing of films.

In January 2010, the theatre played host to Radio 4's "Any Questions?" hosted by Jonathan Dimbley. On the panel were Peter Hennessy (Historian), Louise Doughty (Novelist), Ben Bradshaw (Labour MP) and Chris Grayling (Conservative MP).

Kings Fitness & Leisure

The operational and legal control of The Kings of Wessex Leisure Centre transferred across to the governing body of The Kings of Wessex Academy on 1st April 2009. In addition to all the practical implications involved in the transfer, including establishing new management systems, direct debits, membership schemes and TUPE of staff across to the school, the Centre has been re-branded under the trading name Kings Fitness & Leisure and since 1 April 2009, has exceeded all expectations in delivering a successful leisure centre for the community.

The Centre has been very proactive in delivering a programme of maintenance to a very high standard together with a number of exciting initiatives aimed at reducing the energy costs including new efficient movement sensor lighting in the swimming pool. Kings Fitness & Leisure looks forward to continuing to develop the Centre in accordance with its Business Plan and providing a wide range of activities at competitive prices for enjoyment by all sectors of the community.
