Year 9 (2011 - 2012)
Year 9 students at The Kings of Wessex Academy, follow a three year Key Stage 4 framework and in some of the core subjects, they start studying for their GCSEs. At the end of Year 9,
students will have important decisions to make about which GCSE subjects to choose and which to drop, including the option to take BTEC First certificates in
some vocational subjects. Information Technology and Design Technology are subjects which follow a two year course and students will start these in Year 9 and complete them by the end of Year 10.
Last year, the government announced the introduction of a new qualification - the English Baccalaureate. The English Baccalaureate, or E-Bacc,
will be awarded if a student achieves GCSE Grade C+ passes in English, Maths, two Sciences, a Modern Language and either History or Geography.
If students think they may want to go to university, we would strongly advise them to take these subjects. If they are unsure about going to
university, it would still be advisable to take the E-Bacc subjects to ensure that their options are left open for Higher Education.
Universities are likely to use the E-Bacc in their selection process when deciding to offer students places.
