Sixth Form
The Sixth Form at The Kings of Wessex Academy has an excellent reputation. We are incredibly
proud of our outstanding A-level results which regularly earn us a place in the top
performing schools featured in the National Press. With a pass rate of 99%, 2010 was no exception. 61.3% of all passes were either an A or B grade, 33.9% were grade A, and
13.1% were awarded the new A* grade. Every year, the value we add to the
education of young people puts us in a strong position nationally as well as locally. A
large number of students progress from us to university and a handful of these
go to Oxbridge. The number of students grows annually and is currently well over 300.
This means we are able to offer an impressive and increasing combination of subjects
at AS-level and A-level. We also offer the Extended Project Qualification as well as enrichment
opportunities. The positive approach of our students and the close pastoral support and
monitoring which is a feature of the school's Sixth Form, makes The Kings of Wessex Academy a
special place. Staff and students alike welcome students from any school or college,
and take particular care to help them integrate with the majority who are already well established
within the school.
Courses Available
The Kings of Wessex Sixth Form offers you a wide range of A-level courses leading to qualifications after one or
two years.
A-level (AS/A2)
Advanced Level study can be an extension of the subjects you have already studied at school, or it can be a new one from our wide range
of subjects that do not require you to have studied them at GCSE. Students normally choose 4 or even 5 subjects in Year 12 for study at AS-level, and then most continue with 3 in
Year 13 in order to gain the full A-level. This second year of study in a subject is known as the A2. There are
exceptions to these numbers which are negotiable for each student and their needs. The courses are
modular with 2 or 3 units making up AS and a further 2 or 3 the A2. Students will be examined in Year 12
leading to an AS qualification and in Year 13 to achieve a full A-level.
A-level courses are available in the following subjects:
Art, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Computing, Critical Thinking, Drama & Theatre Studies, Design &
Technology, Design & Technology Food, ICT, English Language, English Literature, French, German, Geography, History, Law,
Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Media Studies, Music, Photography, Physics, Psychology, Physical Education,
Religious Studies & Philosophy, Sociology and Textiles.
The Extended Project
We are one of only a handful of schools who offer this opportunity in the summer of Year 12. Students may opt to take this extra award
which is an AS level equivalent qualification to gain another grade or extra UCAS points that may be very useful in making applications to
higher education. Many students simply take the qualification because it is an opportunity to undertake individual research into a topic of
their choice, developing the skills that will be essential at university. Most projects culminate in a 5,000 word dissertation although there
is scope to develop a performance or produce an artefact but all projects culminate in a presentation which is an excellent opportunity to
share learning with others.
