Homework

Homework Guidance

We believe that homework makes a vital contribution to students’ progress and should be used to reinforce or extend what is learned in school, in addition to developing student independent learning habits.

Students are expected to complete their homework to the best of their ability and we hope they feel a sense of satisfaction from completing this task and from their efforts being recognised and celebrated. We ask that parents and carers support us in supporting their child’s independent learning by providing a suitable space for completion of tasks and ensuring homework is completed on time with maximum effort.

How Much Homework Will Be Set?

Students should expect to complete one to two homework activities each school day. Students are given guidance on how much time to spend on these according to year group along with a suggested schedule of when Y9-11 students could complete their homework to ensure that their work is balanced across the week.

How Will Homework Be Recorded?

All homework will be set on the online platform ClassCharts, so that students and parents/carers can easily see what has been set and access any necessary resources.

What Kind of Tasks Will Be Set?

We want homework to be a productive use of students’ time and, where possible, for student to enjoy completing these tasks meaning a variety of tasks and activities are set.

We have three online resources that are often used for homework, that require an additional log in:
Sparx – used for Maths homework
Educake – used for Science and Geography homework
eRevision – used for Computer Science homework

Literacy is a key feature of all lessons at Kings and this is also reflected in our homework structure.
In Terms 2, 3 and 4, each faculty will also take it in turns to set a piece of homework for Year 9 and 10 that focusses on either learning their Key Words or Reading.

What Support is Available for Homework?

To support students with managing their workload, each term there will be a ‘consolidation week’ where students are set no new homework for one week to ensure students have appropriate time to complete any outstanding tasks or reflect on any previous feedback.

Additionally, to support Year 9 in the transition from their Middle Schools to Kings Academy, Year 9 will have a graduated introduction to homework. No homework will be set in September, ensuring all students have enough time to settle into school, become familiar with class charts and their log in details etc. The next fortnight will only have homework set from Core Subjects and the final fortnight of Term 1 will only have homework set from options subjects.

The library and the learning hub is open every lunchtime with computers and members of staff available to help students with their independent learning.

For those students who need extra support with organisation or with access to the student portal, we provide additional support through the Learning and Mentoring Hub as required.
