English Language

The world really is your oyster if you can use English effectively, recognising its position as a global language.

Think you know English Language? A Level English Language allows you to go on a journey exploring texts that do not include books, poems or plays. You will explore ideas about language and gender, language and power and language and technology. Real world language is explored in A Level English Language.

Studying English Language will enable you to:

  • Develop your interests and enjoyment in the use of English through learning more about its structures and functions.
  • Express yourself in speech and writing with increasing competence and sophistication.
  • Understand the use of language in different contexts.
  • Carry out your own research into an area which interests you.

You will explore the ways in which children acquire language, the change in the English Language over time and the connection between language and the media. You will consider the impact of gender, power and technology on language use. Additionally, you will undertake an investigation exploring a topical language issue that you are able to choose yourself, on a topic of interest to you.

It will be relevant to all degree courses and to all employment. Universities and employers all value students who understand how language works.

SPECIFIC COURSE REQUIREMENTS
GCSE Grade 5 or above in English Language.
