EPQ
Completing an EPQ can help you develop a range of extra study skills. It is valued by higher education institutions as it demonstrates your dedication to independent learning and is often included in offers made by institutions to applicants.
Do you enjoy working independently and researching topics that fascinate you? Have you ever wanted to design your own content and study a topic of your own choice in-depth? Are you motivated and organised and work towards deadlines? If you have answered yes to these questions and this idea appeals to you, then the Extended Project could be for you.
It demonstrates to universities and employers commitment to working independently. It also gives you the opportunity to develop lines of thinking for possible degree study.
Some universities adapt their offers if you complete an EPQ. The University of Southampton writes that these
“additional offers reflects our confidence in the EPQ as an excellent preparation for the kinds of independent study necessary for students to succeed at a research intensive university.”
The Course will develop your independent study skills within an area in which you are passionate. This could be an extension to topics or areas studied within your A Level subjects, or it could be something completely unrelated (to any of your subjects).
There are timetabled EPQ sessions that cover the required ‘Taught Skills’ and these take place on a Wednesday afternoon. The EPQ is an additional qualification offered in Year 12.
The EPQ also has the added benefit that it earns you extra UCAS points and makes you more attractive to universities and employers.
SPECIFIC COURSE REQUIREMENTS
You are expected to demonstrate self-motivation, organisation, and an ability to meet deadlines and write a coherent essay. Other than these skills, enthusiasm and determination are essential. A Grade 4 in GCSE English Language is required.
