Year 9 Students Play The Teachers

18th Jun, 2009, by Jude Owens

The Kings of Wessex School Year 9 students are practising their lines for their forthcoming play "Teechers" to be performed this week.

Written by John Godber, "Teechers" was originally designed for only three performers. In the original production the acting trio played the host of characters. However, in Kings' production there will be a much larger cast sharing the roles amongst the young actors.

The tantalising format of the production is a play-within-a-play on a minimal set using only the bare essentials of a few chairs, a desk, the actors, and, of course, the audience along with a powerful imagination. Interestingly, the same bare essentials used by a Teacher of Drama in the classroom.

"Teechers" comically illustrates some of the trials and tribulations faced in schools in the 1980's. The Year 9 cast have worked hard to bring to life that once talent has been tapped in a school, anything can be possible with a little motivation.

Isaac Taschimowitz has taken on the lead part of playing newly qualified teacher Mr Nixon, whilst the school bully is played by Jamie Strawbridge who gives a scary monologue in the middle of the play. Eppie Tippetts is the delightful Gail who has a soft spot for Mr Nixon and Rachel Moger is the formidable Mrs Parry who loves Drama and teaching and Mr Nixon...

There will be two performances on Wednesday 24 June and Thursday 25 June 2009 at 7.30pm in the Kings Theatre and tickets are £3 and are available from the Main School Office.
