The Kings of Wessex Academy is in the Cheddar Valley on the southern side of the Mendip Hills and has its origins in the
18th Century when Hannah Moore established a church school in Cheddar. The school moved to its present location in the
early 1960's and in 1976 it became an Upper School, taking in students within the age range of 13 - 18 years. There are currently 1200 students
on our roll, including a popular Sixth Form and we are proud of our traditional values, commitment to academic success and the excellent reputation we enjoy within
the community.
The Kings of Wessex Academy provides a happy and caring environment in which all children can flourish. Considerable emphasis is placed on good behaviour and respect for each other.
Students are taught largely in ability groups and this enables them to make good progress and receive the support they need to do well. All Year 11 students have a personal
mentor who works with them to help them achieve the best grades.
Extra sessions are provided by all departments at lunchtimes and after school, as well as our highly successful Easter Revision programme.
The school has a rich and varied curriculum for all its students, and offers a wealth of extra-curricular activities for students in the Arts and Sports. Termly
music concerts and two annual school productions involve a large cast of students. The school operates a highly successful
Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and Sports Leadership Programme. All students are encouraged to get involved in one of the many clubs and activities.
There are also regular out of school visits with annual trips to France and Germany.
Young people benefit from some fantastic facilities. All our subjects are taught in specialist rooms including modern well-equipped Science
laboratories and a Design Technology Centre. The Kings Theatre was recently opened and our young people have access to a superb Learning Resources Centre.
The on-site Leisure Centre includes a swimming pool, squash courts, dance studios and fitness suite. Our students benefit from impressive up-to-date IT
facilities and access to our Virtual Learning Environment (The KLP.)
